Better Later Life Action Plan launched
The Minister for Seniors has launched the Better Later Life Action Plan 2025–2028, setting out practical steps to support older New Zealanders to age well.
New Zealand is a good place to age for most people. Around 65% of the 900,000 older people report good mental wellbeing and contribute actively to their families and communities. But we know there’s more we can do to make sure everyone has the right support, in the right place, at the right time.
Minister for Seniors Hon Casey Costello
The new plan was launched by Minister for Seniors Casey Costello at an event hosted by Grey Power Marlborough in Blenheim today.
It focuses on three priority areas:
- Health and care services – helping people stay independent, connected and able to access services when they need them.
- Housing – ensuring older people have secure, warm, dry homes in the right place.
- Cost-of-living – supporting financial security and easing pressures for older people.
Among the key actions in the plan, it will:
- Improve access to affordable housing and explore new housing options.
- Support people to stay mobile and connected with their community, including improving driver licensing systems
- Strengthen protections against elder abuse, informed by new research.
- Help older people make their money go further and maintain access to banking services.
- Modernise the SuperGold Card to keep it relevant and useful.
By getting our settings right now, we can make sure older New Zealanders continue to contribute to their families, communities and the economy.
